We have received many calls from farmers who have switched to
IFA Telecom or another ISP and suddenly find they cannot send
some emails.
In response to this problem you will find the basic settings
required for many of the Outlook Express, Outlook, Windows Mail
and other email clients in use.
Why will some emails go and not others?
This is probably due to the following: We take the example here
of someone with an eircom.net email account, e.g. joebloggs@eircom.net
While using the old Eircom Dial up or
Broadband, everything worked fine, all emails were being sent
and all were being received. User now switches to IFA Telecom or
some other provider.
Now the user finds that some emails will
be sent and others will not. The ones that will not send receive
an error message soemthing like "The mail server is not in
my list of rcpthosts" with an error code somewhere in the
range 451 through 550.
The reason for this is that the emails
that are not being sent are to non eircom.net email addresses,
such as ereg@sws.ie or animalevents@icbf.com
The eircom smtp server is rejecting the
mails on the basis that they may be spam as they are not being
carried on an eircom.net carrier.
So how do I fix it?
You will need to modify the outgoing smtp
server of your email client to match your current provider. YOU
CANNOT USE the original eircom.net smpt server!
-
Open your email client. (Outlook /
Outlook Express / Windows Mail etc)
-
Click TOOLS / ACCOUNTS.
-
Click on your email account and click
Properties.
-
Click on the SERVER tab.
-
Look at the Outgoing SMTP mail server
line.
-
Notice what it reads. (If it was
eircom.net originally, you will see it reads
mail1.eircom.net)
-
Change this to read the correct SMTP
server for your current provider. e.g For IFA Telecom the
SMTP server should be mail.iol.ie
-
Click apply and ok.
-
Your mail should now work correctly.
